Electrification of space heating can be a powerful strategy for reducing long-term greenhouse gas emissions. In this study we analyze more than 2000 existing buildings in a representative sample of U.S. commercial buildings, examining the energy savings and emissions reductions that can be achieved by installing heat pumps of various types at the time existing fossil-fuel systems need replacement. We also analyze the cost effectiveness of these replacements. The report presents results by system type, building type and geography and makes program, policy, and research recommendations.
