To meet long-term climate goals, new and more aggressive approaches are needed to obtain substantial energy savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from existing buildings. Mandatory building performance standards (BPS) are one such approach. We profile 18 jurisdictions that have adopted these standards including four countries, three states and eleven cities, updating a prior ACEEE report from 2020. We summarize current trends across jurisdictions and draw preliminary conclusions. In the three years since our previous report there has been substantial progress and learning on how best to structure and implement BPS policies in a way that provides quality housing and workplaces while also obtaining large energy savings and emissions reductions. However, since implementation is just beginning, there is still much to learn.
