Low-income renters often experience unaffordable rents and expensive energy bills. They are also increasingly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Energy efficiency retrofits can remedy some of these challenges, but local governments are concerned about the potential for resident displacement stemming from these projects. This fact sheet provides a high-level summary of the Energy Equity for Renters Toolkit and outlines how local governments can use energy efficiency programs, affordable housing policy, and equity-driven strategies to improve outcomes for renters and achieve their climate and affordability goals. For more details on the strategies highlighted in the fact sheet, please see the toolkit.
