Slipstream is seeking a Senior Researcher, Community Decarbonization who wants to apply their knowledge and expertise to advance a clean energy transition through decarbonization policy analysis and applied research. This position is part of our Research and Innovation Team where we study, develop, and test the next generation of energy solutions across multiple sectors of the economy. The Senior Researcher, Community Decarbonization will lead research projects to assess carbon, cost, and equity impacts of different building decarbonization strategies, policies, and approaches. The primary areas of focus will be on community building energy policies like building performance standards and building energy codes, along with community energy and resiliency planning and policy development. The ideal candidate will have experience in one or more of these areas.

Our physical offices are in Madison, WI and Chicago, IL; this position is a remote position but we will prioritize those candidates that live in the Midwest or Northeast.
What you’ll do:
- Conduct primary and secondary research with a focus on building energy policy and community and resiliency energy planning.
- Provide policy and technical support to community-level energy and resiliency planning initiatives.
- Manage research and development projects – timeline, budget, resources, and partnerships.
- Develop and implement research and policy strategies for Slipstream in areas of expertise; prioritize and execute strategic partnership activities to advance strategies
- Assist in securing funding including proposal development.
- Utilize research results and technical knowledge to contribute to development of new policy, energy plans, and programs.
- Work collaboratively as a member of project teams with research and subject-matter experts across Slipstream.
- Communicate clearly through reports and presentations that show the results of your research.
What you’ll need:
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in policy, urban planning, environmental or sustainability studies, science communications, energy analysis, economics, or social science field
- 6-10 years of work-related or graduate school-based practical research experience
- Natural curiosity and interest in learning about new approaches to decarbonization
- Ability to manage projects both independently and alongside team members with high level of organization.
- Experience with data compilation, quantitative methods, and applying research methods to address policy and research problems.
- Analytical thinker, ability to solve complex problems, and conduct policy analysis
- Ability to communicate complex concepts with a diverse group of energy stakeholders, including technical and non-technical (researchers, facility operators, building occupants, working groups, etc.)
- Excellent organizational skills, interpersonal communication skills, and attention to detail
